One of us still has a fair way to go… My barely begun jigsaw Queer Eye, Lego style The Black Pearl, completed by Mr WIAAīut this is a music blog, and although I had no idea what the featured song might be when I started out with this one, as often happens, it has fallen into my lap. Three days later and two of us have finished their ‘make’. Down at the other end of the country DD was putting together a scene from her latest Lego set (yes, Lego for adults is now a big thing apparently, as well as Airfix kits). As ever there were a few ‘makes’ in our stockings so I started work on my new jigsaw and Mr WIAA got down to creating the Black Pearl, courtesy of his traditional gift of an Airfix kit. The good thing about eating early-ish elsewhere, is that you still have a fair chunk of evening when you get home and our Christmas presents beckoned. It’s all got a bit more complicated.ġ00 years ago many of us could only afford root vegetables for Christmas dinner – Now some of us choose them. Back in the day my granny made Christmas dinner for 15 of us, and it was delicious, but that was before the era of the ‘celebrity chef’ Christmas Cookbook and of: three types of stuffing red cabbage sprouts with chestnuts and gluten-free/vegan options. Problem is the bar has been raised in terms of what is served up nowadays. Even the best home cooks find it a challenge to coordinate the roasting, heating, boiling and stirring of so many dishes at the same time it seems.ĭD had a lovely time at her boyfriend’s parents, but of course we are now teasing them that next year it will be their turn, so we can all be together. It was also quite reassuring to see my sister-in-law getting in a bit of a flap over the serving up of the turkey and trimmings, as I thought that only happened to me. Although I said we would be home alone this year, that didn’t turn out to be the case, as we were actually invited out in the end and didn’t have to do any cooking on the day at all. They sold the rights to it during the Sixties to ex-manager Allen Klein.įollow us on Facebookand Twitterfor more super stories.Well, I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas festivities.

Sadly, for The Rolling Stones, “Paint It, Black” is one of the tunes they no longer control.

In the late 1980s, “Paint It Black” became associated with the Vietnam War due to its use in both the ending credits of the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket and its use as the theme song for Tour Of Duty, a CBS-TV show about the Vietnam war which ran from 1987-1990.ħ. PAINT IT BLACK SONG HOW TO
Talking on his Absolute Radio show, Stones’ co-guitarist Ronnie Wood disclosed that Keith Richards has trouble remembering how to play this song. Jagger got the line “I turn my head until my darkness goes” from James Joyce’s Ulysses.ĥ. Nearly forty years later, in 2004, it was ranked number 176 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.Ĥ. In 1966, the single topped both the United States and the United Kingdom charts, making it the first ever US and UK number one single to feature a sitar. It’s not an original thought by any means. When asked at the time why he wrote a song about death and depression Mick Jagger replied: “I don’t know. Keith Richards later said that the comma was added by the record label, Decca.Ģ.There was no specific inspiration for the lyrics. The original version was entitled “Paint It Black” without a comma. Two very good reasons to dig deeper and discover more about a song, music critic Richie Unterberger said, “qualifies as perhaps the most effective use of a sitar in a rock song.”ġ. What’s more, it’s one of our favourite tunes ever. Released in 1966, it was the first single from the fourth album, Aftemath, and became an anthem for the Sixties counter culture. One of the most iconic of their incredible 439 tracks is “Paint It, Black”.

Hardly surprising when you learn they’ve been together for over half a century and hold the record for the most recorded songs of all time. The Rolling Stones have probably released more iconic tracks than any other band in history.
